Campers come back to CYJ year after year because of the lifelong friendships they make, the wonderful facilities we offer, the opportunity to learn new skills in a dynamic and fun environment, and of course, because of our fantastic, talented, and dedicated staff! The vast majority of our staff also comes back year after year, too.
Founded in 1939, Camp Young Judaea offers children ages 8-15 an exciting, fun-filled, learning experience. The camp is run by an independent non-profit organization that does not represent any one branch of Judaism; we have campers from a variety of Jewish backgrounds. We strive to instill pride and knowledge of Jewish heritage, history and our connection to Israel. Although most of our bunk counselors are Jewish, many members of our kitchen, maintenance, office, and other support staff are from a variety of faiths. We are a kosher camp and do not allow any non-kosher food on camp grounds.
CYJ is located on the shore of Lake Baboosic in Amherst, New Hampshire, just minutes from Manchester and Nashua. Our waterfront features two waterski/wakeboard power boats, canoes, kayaks, sailboats, paddleboats, and windsurfers. Camp facilities include eight tennis courts, several playing fields, basketball and volleyball courts, archery and riflery ranges, radio station, outdoor adventure course, a large modern dining room, sturdy wooden cabins, and several other spacious indoor facilities, including a gym/theater, arts and crafts studio, and rec hall. Shabbat services are held in a beautiful grove, sheltered by towering pine trees. Music, dance, and drama are integral parts of our program. Bunk counselors live with campers in rustic yet comfortable cabins; some support staff live in separate adult housing units.
An active night life is available just minutes away. Movie theaters, restaurants, and malls are located a short distance from camp. We are just one hour from Boston. We're also near many scenic vacation areas, including the Maine and New Hampshire seacoast, as well as the White Mountains. Counselors are allowed to bring cars and receive six days off during the summer and several nights off each week. We provide van service for staff without cars and also have bicycles available for use. Information is available during the summer about local sites, hostels, and traveling tips for after-camp plans.
Please note that smoking is only allowed for staff in designated areas, after lights-out time in the evening (no smoking during the work day anywhere in camp). We also have a zero-tolerance policy for drug or alcohol use in camp.
